California Landscape, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 11x14x1.5" , "Off PCH" by Carol Schiff Studio

My good friend, and excellent photographer, Ted Fuhrer,  has done it again, supplying me with so many inspiring images to paint from.  On of the many places he has lived was the coastal region of California.

Ted, I hope you think I did justice to your work.

I am always in awe of the western coast of our country.  Living on the east coast is great, and I am so blessed to be here. We have gentle surf, warm water, island music.... But to me, the west coast is larger than life.  So rugged, so big, a constant test to exist there. The boulders are larger than houses, the mountain streams are full of rushing rapids. The pioneer spirit is still alive there.  I cannpt wait to visit again.

Almost Home

During one of my trips back home to Gloucester, MA I took lots of photos of the harbor some with boats and some without.  Because Gloucester is such a busy place in the summer there always seem to be boats so getting photos without a boat or two or three is rare.
Gloucester has an interesting harbor because there is an island pretty close to land called Ten Pound Island.   Legend has it the island got it's name because that is how much the settlers paid the local Indians for it or that is how many sheep pens or pounds it could hold.  There has been a Lighthouse on the island since the early 1800's and one of it's claims to fame is that Winslow Homer stayed with the Lighthouse keeper and his family one summer producing about 50 paintings of the harbor.
I took this photo of some small sailboats racing towards the island.   It was very windy and the boats looked so small heading towards those big rocks but yet it did not seem dangerous.  I could not help painting this photo in a whimsical way.
On the bottom right of the photo is the Lighthouse.

Bye Bye LIonfish

Do you have a piece you have done that you really love.  Something that is somehow a little special, maybe even so special you hope no one buys it?  And, if no one buys it for long enough you can keep it?
My little collage Lionfish was just like that.  I don't know what it was but I just loved it.  I loved planning it, creating it, looking at it, showing it off and having it in the house.  I was very sad to see it go and I may have not let it go if a special person hadn't asked to buy it.  So, even though I did not want to sell it I did part with it as a gift because I knew the person who wanted it loved it as much as I did.  Besides he is residing in The Keys!!

Small Seascape, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x8" Oil "Crashing Wave" by Carol Schiff Studio SOLD

In the past, I painted lots of seascapes, but in recent years, my focus has been on landscapes and flowers.  Today, I went back to my roots....kind of.

I wanted to do a seascape, but something different than the past.  I found one of my images of the surf and cropped it very closely.

I tried to paint with a variety of strokes and get plenty of action into the scene.  I finished with scattering some "foam" .  I enjoyed trying to bring something new to an old subject.

Summer Fun in Florida, 5x7" Oil

This is a little 5x7 oil of my granddaughter Stephanie for our July challenge, Summer Fun.  She was visiting from Massachusetts and wanted to learn to surf.  We went up to Ron Jon's in Cocoa and she took a few lessons and had a great time.  I always loved this photo even though it didn't show her face.  You could tell from her stance, the water swirling around her and her determination she was really into it.
What could say summer more in Florida than riding the waves.  Even though it is very hot here in the summer the beaches make it cool in a different way.

Daily Painting, "Waves", Seascape, 6x8", Oil, SOLD

I enjoy trying to capture the feel of the surf rushing to shore on my canvas.

The ocean seems to have a different character and color each time I visit.  This is the east coast of Florida, while California is much more rugged and has a deep rich blue hue.

I like to use my daily paintings very informally in my home.  Just prop them up where ever the mood strikes! No frame necessary!

Daily Painting Seascape in Oil, 4x12" "Tropical Waters" SOLD

I love to do seascapes, especially with a palette knife, as it allows me to use plenty of texture.  I  like working with the ocean, it seems like a different place minute by minute.

How cool to have all this texture and all these shades of blue, aqua and green.

Being an artist is a good thing....I am very grateful.

Have a wonderful day!

Cooling off

With all the talk of snow and cold temperatures I thought it might be nice to look at something completely different.  I painted this a few years ago and always loved the universal stance that people take when they are standing in the water, somehow more relaxed, more natural.   Looking out at all that ocean and space makes you forget that even though you feel alone there are lots and lots of people all around you.

Another cloudy day

Carol posted a wonderful sky painting yesterday. Coincidentally that is what we did in group on Thursday, clouds and skies.  Carmen gave a demonstration explaining her techniques and use of color and tone.  She also told us about some other painters she had discovered on YouTube and how they went about their paintings.  It was really interesting and so much fun to watch.
After the demo we set to work on creating our own paintings trying to use some of the tips Carmen gave us.  I think the best suggestion she had was to experiment.  Everyone approaches their canvas differently, depending on their style, what they see and want to convey.  Even though I had several photos with me I decided to put them aside and just paint my whole canvas blue and then put in some clouds.  I had no other plan.  I just wanted to lay down some paint, mix some colors, try different approaches and see what happened.
After awhile the clouds seem to take shape and lead me in a certain direction.  Some of the clouds wanted to stay light while other areas called to be darkened. Some of the canvas did not want to be clouds or sky at all but the ocean.  One little area demanded to be a piece of land!!  It really was a great exercise in mixing, setting a mood and letting go.

Good Harbor Beach

Looking at some more hand painted photos I thought it would be interesting to post some New England scenes.  This is Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester, MA.  It is one of the most popular beaches in Glouceste, especially with the locals.
One one side you have to walk over a bridge from the road to get to the beach and the bridge goes over a natural inlet that the kids love.  It is a shallow, safe place for the little ones to play and the water is not as cold.
You can see the creek on the right in this photo.

New England Scene

I am going to Massachusetts for a visit in a week or so.  One of my goals when I am up there besides visiting family and friends and eating all those local treats is to take lots of photos.  I love going on photo shoots when I am there.  It is a great excuse to just drive around and re-acquaint myself with the ocean, marshes and rugged coast line.
Years ago one of my favorite things to paint was black and white photos.  I loved the old post cards and portraits from the turn of the century that were hand painted.  They had such a wonderful hazy glow to them.  They always looked liked they were someones dream of how a place should look.  I still have a few of the ones I did.  This one is in Rockport, MA.  These cottages overlook the ocean and as we used to say, "Next stop England".

Happy Day

Last week we decided that instead of painting indoors at The Guild, we would do a photo shoot, weather permitting.  Well the weather did permit and then some.  We spend a glorious day at Sebastian Inlet State Park.
Sebastian Inlet is a natural wonder just about 10 miles down the road from Melbourne. The park has a fishing pier, a huge tidal pool that is just great for kids, the beach and some of the best waves in the area. Being out there today just reinforces how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area.
Here are a few shots of our day.  We ended our photo shoot by having lunch at The Sebastian Inn, a great little spot right on the beach.
We missed you Carmen, Cindy and Denette.  We'll just have to do it again.

Inspiration

After our outing on Monday of this week I transfered my photos then started going through them looking for some I might like to paint.  As I was scrolling through I thought about how lucky we were to live in such a beautiful area.  The beach, the ocean, the wildlife, there is so much to see and enjoy.
I thought I might share a few photos from our glorious day at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral.

Solace, 6x8 Original Oil Painting

This is a painting of a mood. What is she thinking? Is she lonely? Or does she have the urge to cross that ocean and have an adventure? Maybe she is just thanking God for her blessings.

The beach is so peaceful in the morning, and it is such a good time to catch pelicans fishing for their breakfast. There is a girl who does Tai Chi there in the morning and I'd love to join her, but it seems too intrusive for such a serene discipline. I just can't bring myself to ask her.

Thar She Blows: A Recreation of Moby Dick by Cindy and Carmen

Cindy Michaud and I took on the ultimate challenge this year: the Mystery Build Competition. The whole idea is to make a recreation of a work of art from the objects in a small box. The Mystery Build organizers mailed the 9"x12" box to us, and we had to make our piece from nothing but the items inside, including the box itself if we wanted, plus paint. That's it. So the box contained a small variety of wood blocks and veneers, clay, a piece of rope, a square of canvas, a loose canvas, Elmer's glue and a few other things. We used the box, the packing material, and the instructions.

To see how we did it (there's a video) and (we hope) vote for our entry, click here: Mystery Build. There are a whopping 289 entries, and ours is Number 2 so it's easy to find.

Big Hair 80s, Oil Painting by Carmen Beecher

I painted this for the Daily Paintworks "Paint Yourself Young" challenge. Remember the 80s? Large hair, mall bangs, big shoulder pads? In deciding what to paint, it was a tossup between this and one of me at age five, with a bandaid on my head, standing in front of a reclining pig.

Ballard Park, Original Oil on Canvas

I had not painted outside in two years, so this was quite a challenge. It was one of those paintings I had to improve upon in the studio. ...
