This is a scene from the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, which is a very diverse spot to visit. It has jungle-like trails, marshes and the Cape Canaveral Seashore. This marsh is on the Blackpoint Wildlife Drive, a popular spot for birders.

Challenge for October, Small 10x3 Inch Artwork

It is a lot of fun to completely change the usual format for a painting. Our challenge this month was to create 10x3-inch art.

It was a magical time when my cousins took us on a tour around their state, beautiful Alaska. This particular day was cloudy but a break in the clouds created a beautiful path of light in the valley. Just the kind of drama I like in a painting.

A 10x3 format works well for a single line doodle. The shape this one took, the long time it took me to fill it in, and the randomness of it made me think it had something to do with the times!

I Like Dreaming

My inspiration for this challenge is a charming oil on wood landscape of the Bay of Naples. I definitely don't have the talent or the patience to replicate something as well executed as this little gem, but I was inspired to start reminiscing about this and other favorite views from my travels.

Persistence Pays Off!

I am very excited to announce, that one of my artworks has been chosen as set design.  Netflix has a soon to be released, new series call "Southern Comfort".

 The producers chose my horse painting on wood planks, to display in their ranch house set.  I am thrilled that it will be visible in many episodes of the new series.

This is not my first experience with television.  You may have seen these seascapes on Hawaii Five-O or Magnum PI.

or, perhaps the still life below, in the  academy award nominated movie, "Joker".

 

People have asked, "How do you do this?"  I always give the same answer......persistence!  Since 2009, I have been on Etsy, and that is where I get 99% of my sales.  EVERY DAY, all those years, I have posted new items, advertised, and worked SEO, in an attempt to be found on the net. Daily Painting, Seagull Painting, "The Three Stooges" by Carol Schiff, 6x8 Oil, SOLD

The three birds in today's daily painting look a little goofy to me.  Maybe they are hungry, or maybe they are plotting against one another, but I just don't trust them.

 They remind me of my childhood and the notorious "Three Stooges", Larry, Moe and Curly.
You remember them don't you?  They were always getting into trouble.

They are looking at a fourth seagull....not in this painting, and I don't think it is in a friendly manner!  I hope to do a second painting of this group, including the fourth member.

The reference photo was shared from Shelley Smart at her wonderful blog here.  Shelley is a fantastic photographer and generous too.  She gave me permission to use her image years ago.  I hope you will visit her interesting blog, "A Year at the Beach", where she recorded the activity on the beach every day.

Sweet Success! A daily painter makes it into the movies.

Today is a special day for me!

It's the premiere opening of the new 

                                         Joaquin Phoenix - Robert DeNiro movie, "Joker".

Warner Brother's purchased this painting from me, as set design, several months ago.  They were filming in Brooklyn, at the time, and I have been waiting to see it released.

They chose this small (8x10") still life painting.  I envision that it will be hanging on the wall of some dark and dreary brownstone, decorated in the style of your great grandmother.

The Joy of Being an Artist

Way back last year, I received an e-mail from young boy in Cleveland who was working on an art project.  His assignment was to interview an artist and do a powerpoint presentation.  He asked me a few general questions about my art.  This phone painting is what interested him.

I am sure many of you receive the same type of requests.  I have had several, from young students.  I always reply, trying to  answer their inquiries, without doing ALL the work for their report.  Occasionally, I will get a "thank you" in return, often nothing.

This young boy from Cleveland, Jake, is not the usual.  We had several exchanges.  He was always extremely polite , and always promised to send me reports.  And he did!  He sent me an outline of his presentation, then I got a video of him giving it.  My favorite question from his audience was "is she still alive?", which he answered with a resounding "yes"...Whew!

My children and grandchildren were excited and thrilled to see all this activity about me in Cleveland.

After a few weeks, he sent me his grade (he aced it) on the project, and I though we were through.  But no....  He also has to do a painting that emulates my work.

This is my second update on his painting in progress.  Note the picture of my phone, there on the table.

And here  is the finished piece!  Didn't he do well!!?!!

I am thrilled, each time I hear from him.  This has been such an  exciting experience for me and hopefully for him too.  I now understand why people choose to teach, and, what a wonderful teacher he has.  He or she has set him on a road that will stay with him for life. What a fantastic project for a young mind.   Bravo!!

So, for me, painting has been so much more than just painting.  Today, I have a new energy and desire to get back to the easel....how lucky am I?  Thank you Jake!

I was shocked to realize that I haven't posted since September 1st. It's amazing what a hurricane threat does to one's daily life. First, you stock up on supplies; then you install all your storm shutters; pack up things you don't want washed away; finally, evacuate. If it's a slow-moving storm like Dorian, you wait...and wait...and wait. I am not complaining, because some of my favorite beautiful places were wiped out completely in the Bahamas. We were lucky, but the people there lost everything. Homes, livelihoods, and even loved ones. I am so sad for them. Our government won't take them in without papers, and their papers are somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic by now. What a terrifying situation for them.

The proceeds from this painting will be donated to hurricane relief for the Bahamian storm victims.

June Challenge, Black and White Art

Carmen: I love roots and the patterns they make. I was just in the Smoky Mountains and saw these beautiful roots spreading across a ledge. This challenge gave me an excuse to draw them in pen and ink.

Then I decided to do a black-and-white oil painting, so I chose a subject that had little color to begin with, Ruby Beach on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. This is a tiny 5x7 painting.

Carol:  For this challenge, I chose three small paintings, done in black and white on a red support.  I allowed small amounts of the red to show through, which I believe, gives an interesting warmth to the paintings.

These paintings were all done from photographs of flapper movie stars.

Fay: Several years ago, a distant cousin sent me this picture of the old Dressler family homestead. My great, great, great grandfather, Thomas Wilson Richardson, married Margaret Dressler in this house in 1860. My great, great grandfather was born here. I was inspired.

I started drawing the cabin free hand. REALLY free hand.

I decided it wasn't dark enough, so I darkened it up a little and added some sparse trees.

The final sketch below is a try at graphite transfer. I wish I had known about this technique BEFORE I spent hours trying get the cabin above in proper prospective. This discovery may have change my whole approach to art!

Kathy: Below is my response to the challenge. I love drawing with Micron Pens on good watercolor paper. This drawing was inspired by a leaf found in a cluster of similar leaves in an open field. I was on a one month artist's vacation in a beautiful cabin at the Furnace Mountain Zen Center in Kentucky. Surrounded by woods, I got to hike, paint and draw every day. I thought the leaf was just a beautiful dandelion leaf. There was no stalk or flower. But later I checked online and through several field guides, and it is most likely a young leaf from a milk or bull thistle.

Jean: I love black and white. My sketchbooks are full of ink/Pitt pen drawings. Black and white forces you to simplify to achieve tonal variation. The drawing below is of my son Chris, underwater. He loved swimming. I found an old snapshot of him from one of those throwaway, underwater cameras. So I sketched him!

My Still Life Painting in the Movies!

How lucky can I be?

One of my paintings was recently purchased for set design in a new movie!  The Warner Brothers movie, is being filmed in Harlem, Manhattan and the Bronx., and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro.  The title is "Romeo".

The painting is one I completed in a workshop a few years back.

I am thrilled, and only hope it doesn't end up on the cutting room floor.

The movie is due to be released in October, 2019.

On my Way to Hollywood!, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting

An unexpected, but exciting thing has happened!

Warner Brothers has purchased one of my paintings, for set design in their new movie "Romeo".

The movie is filming now, in Brooklyn, starring Joaquin Phoenix.  I believe it is scheduled for release in the fall of 2019.

I have been so fortunate, as I am currently under contract with CBS, to use two seascapes, in their TV series PI Magnum and Hawaii Five-O.

A scene that is found everywhere, in my new state, North Carolina.  Maybe not everywhere, but, everywhere around here in the Asheville area.

We are just getting hints of fall.  A maple will have one red branch, while the rest of the tree is still green.  But I can sense that it WANTS to be red!
