Daily Painting, Seagull Painting, "The Three Stooges" by Carol Schiff, 6x8 Oil, SOLD

The three birds in today's daily painting look a little goofy to me.  Maybe they are hungry, or maybe they are plotting against one another, but I just don't trust them.

SOLD
They remind me of my childhood and the notorious "Three Stooges", Larry, Moe and Curly.
You remember them don't you?  They were always getting into trouble.

They are looking at a fourth seagull....not in this painting, and I don't think it is in a friendly manner!  I hope to do a second painting of this group, including the fourth member.

The reference photo was shared from Shelley Smart at her wonderful blog here.  Shelley is a fantastic photographer and generous too.  She gave me permission to use her image years ago.  I hope you will visit her interesting blog, "A Year at the Beach", where she recorded the activity on the beach every day.

Challenge for September, Patterns in Nature

Kathy always gets the closest of closeups in nature and makes wonderful art from them. She suggested we all make art from patterns in nature for our challenge this month.
 The Yellow Basket

by Denette Schweikert

11" X 14"

Kathy told me that this painting qualifies as patterns in nature but I don't know. I started this picture a long time ago and put it aside. I then found it, really changed it, and finished it. Now I'm happy about it. I shot the photo at a "pond tour" in Merritt Island.

Dragonfly Wings

Watercolor, 11x14

I do my best thinking in the pool, so while I was trying to think of a pattern in nature for this challenge, a couple of dragonflies were flying around. I decided to do some layered dragonflies in fanciful colors. The blue one is an actual copy of a certain dragonfly's colors, believe it or not.

I was happily overwhelmed by the challenge this month. You can get so lost in really looking at nature and how beautiful even a bug can be. I went off in several directions until I came across some photos of viruses, yes viruses. I could not get over how beautiful these deadly things could be.

They also reminded me of patterns that I see on native dress in Africa, which incorporate so much of nature in their design. I will not tell you what these viruses are but just know as Billy Crystal would say, "It is better to look good than to feel good."

Several viruses collaged together

I took this photo at the New York Botanical Gardens as it seemed Mother Nature had outdone herself in the design.  The leaves were so interesting they almost appeared to be a product in plastic made by a whimsical artist.  Little did I know this would be the perfect prompt for the challenge.

And my doodled design...if I had had colored pencils with me I would have enjoyed playing with the greens but rendering it only in black and white was fun.

Patterns in nature are probably my favorite inspiration. I'm so happy my fellow pieces were willing to play along. For this challenge I was thinking snails! (Okay, I think about snails a lot...patterns, spirals, beautiful colors...what's not to love. ) It was, however, a rough month with very little time for art and so I just did some doodling. Here are two snail inspired watercolor and inks.

One of the most intense times I have spent sketching nature was spent at Silver Springs on a Piece's retreat about four years ago. I was fascinated by the profusion of Angel Trumpets.

Tons of Trumpets  2014

A recent sketch

I change the challenge a bit from making a close-up pattern, to just making a pattern. The sketch with tons of Angel Trumpets made me think of the pattern of a cotton pinafore that was one of my favorites as a child. I took the form of the stem and added one blossom to each right sided angle (or is that angel)?. Now the pattern resembles the fabric these blossoms brought to mind. Not exactly what intended when I started this challenge, but it makes me happy.

Insects are really beautiful

Patterns in nature are a great inspiration for many artists. Dragonflies are especially interesting. I have painted dragonflies and had a couple in the file, but wanted to do something new and out of my imagination. I imagined a bee flying over a field and water. (Is there such a thing as a "bee's eye view?") It started as a watercolor (smaller print) and ended up as a mixed media. I just had fun with the patterns and a limited palette.

I was thrilled to get a photograph of him flying, something that usually doesn't work out for me.

I used my palette knife to obtain the texture of the water.

Guests for Dinner, 24x18 Oil on Canvas by Carmen Beecher

SOLD

This Wood Stork is calmly looking over the Spoonbills feeding in Mrazek Pond in the Everglades. The Wood Stork puts his bill underwater and waits for his prey, then his beak snaps shut at lightning speed, 25 milliseconds. This is known as grope-feeding. The Wood Stork has one of the fastest reflexes of any vertebrate.

This was just sold by the Brevard Cultural Alliance (BCA) at the Melbourne Airport. We artists are so lucky to have the BCA and Lynne Brezina.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Wildlife Painting, Bird Art, 6x8" Robin in Oil, SOLD

When I was a kid growing up in northern Ohio, I always anxiously awaited the return of robins, knowing winter was gone when they came.  I wondered where they spent the winters....now I know....North Carolina!

SOLD
Well, anyway, that is where this bird spent the winter and where my photographer friend, Ted Fuhrer snapped an image of him.  Thanks for allowing me to use it, Ted.

I really like this in a chunky black frame!

Thanks for reading my blog today.  I hope you see a robin in your tree.

Collage Day

Thursday was my day to lead the group and I thought instead of painting it would be fun to do a collage.  We hadn't had a collage day in quite a while.  I have a basket of papers I use.  Some of the papers are tissue, some designer , some hand painted.  I even have pages from books in different languages, sheet music and odds and ends I have picked up along the way.  I only keep as many as will fit into my basket so I can carry everything I need in one container.
I brought in several photos, acrylic paints for the under paintings, brushes and the binding medium.  The panels I brought were small but because we were doing an under painting then the collage I thought we might need a few weeks to complete our projects.  Although we made a lot of progress we didn't quite finish so next week I will post photos of our final results.
When I got home I decided to keep collaging.  I wanted to finish my group project with the group so I looked around for something else.  I found a photo Kathy had given us awhile ago to paint and I decided to collage my little bird instead.
The first photo is the one Kathy gave us, the second is my under painting and the third is the start of my collage.

Flight Path, 10x8 Original Oil Painting, Wildlife

I can't seem to stop painting landscapes lately. This was a South Carolina scene; click on the "Click to Purchase" link to see more realistic colors of the painting.

Last week 4/8 of the Pieces of 8 went to the art museum in Vero Beach and had a wonderful day. The exhibit there is so interesting, using everything from bottle caps to spools of thread to form art. It's found art at is finest, and warranted going back to see it all again. Since Kathy is away, no one thought to take pictures of our trip. We'll try to do better next time.

I have always been drawn to wildlife.  When my son was small, I did a series of counted cross stitch pictures for his room.  I still have a few....a bear and a bobcat.

I think these would be terrific in a boy's room too.

Pretty in Pink, 6x6 Original OIl Painting by Carmen Beecher

Kathy Garvey and I made a trek to the zoo and had a lovely time photographing all the wildlife. As you can see, some flamingos were brighter in color than others, but they were all beautiful.

Wildlife Painting, Daily Painting, "Great Blue Heron" by Carol Schiff, 11x14x1.5" Oil

It's always tricky trying to do a wildlife painting.  The tricky part is getting that perfect photo to work from.  With this daily painting, I got lucky!

My group, Pieces of Eight, was touring Sebastian, Fl.  On the way home we made a quick stop at the riverside park in Grant looking for wildlife and other scenes.  I was out on the fishing dock and this beautiful Great Blue Heron was standing there on the railing, interested in stealing a fish from the fishermen.  He held his ground when I inched closer, and closer.  I got several good close-up shots.  This was my favorite pose.

I painted this in oil with palette knife and brush, on 11x14x1.5" gallery wrap canvas.  The sides are painted black.  I just love the substantial feel of gallery wrap canvases. If you are interested in a wildlife painting for your home, perhaps you will consider this one.
