HOORAY!
by Denette Schweikert
36" X 48"

This painting is of a picture I took at beautiful Costa Rica.

See more of my work here

This large painting has been sitting on my easel in TWO YEARS!  I have made a lot  paintings since this time, but just this picture has sat there collecting dust.  It is wonderful having it completed.  And I am happy with it.

Sunflower Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 14x18x.75" Oil

Last summer I visited Colorado and fell in love with the state.  The beauty is breath taking and I was trying to record it all on my camera.

Today's painting is a light hearted, laid back attempt to capture the wild sunflowers swaying in the breeze of the Colorado landscape.

On a whim, I decided to paint over an old abstract painting, that carried lots of texture in specific areas.

That set the tone of the painting for me.  I stayed loose and free.

Much of the background is from the original painting.

I have a friend who burns her unsuccesful paintings at the end of the year.  I think that is a dangerous activity.  The fumes of the paint and mediums burning cannot be a good thing.  I much prefer to paint over a less successful painting and save a few dollars by reusing the canvas.  I am all about recycling.

Happy Painting!!

Spring Bouquet, 6x8 Oil on Canvas, Floral Painting by Carmen Beecher

The Pieces of 8 ambitiously painted this still life during one of our sessions. It was a lot of fun. I am trying to get it into my head to simplify, along with all the other disciplines in art that I am trying to get into my head. People always ask, "How long did it take you to do that?" They should be asking how many successes and failures, trials and errors, immersing oneself in values, composition, drawing, color, brush strokes, perspective, form, lighting, subtleties--it goes on and on. That's why there are so many aged artists. Doing art is a constant striving for improvement, and if "artist" is something you are, not something you do, you will do it for as long as you can hold a brush.

Yellow Plumerias, 10x10 Original OIl Painting on Stretched Canvas by Carmen Beecher

I decided to get all realistic with this one. Plumerias, otherwise known as frangipani, grow prolifically in Bermuda, where I used to live. They are used in weddings and even on wedding cakes. In Hawaii they are used to make those beautiful leis. If you plant a seed from a tree it will result in a surprise flower, different from the tree that gave you the seed. A seed from my pink plumeria tree produced a tree with white flowers edged in pink, much prettier than the mother tree's flowers.

You can cut a piece of branch from a plumeria, stick it in the garage all winter, plant it in spring, and it will grow. It's a wonder to me that we don't have plumeria forests. The only drawback is that they lose their leaves in winter and some people don't like that. To me they just become an interesting abstract design.

Ballard Park, Original Oil on Canvas

I had not painted outside in two years, so this was quite a challenge. It was one of those paintings I had to improve upon in the studio. ...
