Challenge for July, Florida Themed Art

Our challenge this month: simply, "Florida."

 * * * * *

Cindy: When the theme for the month was “Florida” I knew immediately which piece said it all for me:

Hanging now in my NC studio this piece is huge! About 48” tall and almost 30” wide, it was rendered right before I left the state.  It was from a compilation of photos I had taken while kayaking the Indian River with a liberal dose of imagination thrown in for good measure.  I love the mountains and its four defined seasons but when I feel lonesome for a good river paddle on a hot day I simply lift my eyes and visit Florida in my mind.  This was done for me, me, me and it never mattered if anyone else liked it or not!

Kathy: I'm on a roll painting leaves lately and Florida has some beauties! I was watering my brother's Monstera plant and its gorgeous giant leaves just begged to be painted. I trimmed one off that was hiding near the ground and past looking healthy, and photographed it. (This leaf is 30 inches tall and 27 inches wide!)

Sometimes I experiment in Photoshop to see how I might want to paint something. If I don't get around to painting it before our Florida challenge is up, below is my digital version. By adding patterns and filters I can make a photo look like a watercolor. The background is created by "painting" with a "brush" made from the same photo.

Carmen: There is an island in Florida that is just as good as being in the Bahamas, and it is called North Captiva. I am thinking of painting a large version of this lovely spot.

I painted a familiar landmark in the area The Grant House.  It was built in 1916 in the town that is now Grant,  by the Benson Family, who were pioneers in the Melbourne area.  I have visited there several times and always marvel at the how small and isolated these early pioneers must have felt in this vast wilderness that was Florida.

I have always loved flowers. When I first moved to Florida, I planted 4 hibiscus trees in my backyard. The blooms were a lively color between coral and pomegranate. And DOUBLE, which I love.  I have used one of my photographs of a single blossom multiple times. Below is the collage I made when my oldest daughter ask me to create my concept of God. You may notice that my two daughters as well as my four grandchildren are all tucked into the pedals.

24"x 30"

For this challenge, I again turned to this hibiscus and to collage. I think I captured the vivaciousness of the hibiscus, but my shadowed pedals are too dark. The  two leaves are from my handmade papers. If I try this subject again, I will use all handmade papers.

FLORIDA!
Our theme for this month... fun and appropriate!

"Sandpipers on Melbourne Beach"
Watercolor, 8" x 11"

These are two of the things I love about living in Florida, the ever-changing water, and the birds. Isn't it entertaining to watch the little pipers run along the surf's edge? I love how they stay ahead of you while searching for those elusive morsels in the sand.
Taking a walk on a beach will sooth your soul.

I had to post this image for my "Florida" challenge.  After living in Florida for over 40 years, my husband and I moved to Asheville NC recently.  We still spend three months, every winter, in Florida.

During those three months, I am now a snow bird, with no responsibilities.  We rent on the beach, and I get to enjoy the Florida I never knew as a resident.  That includes, a morning walk on the beach.

This painting is the path, I take, each morning.

Living on the beach in Florida is amazing.  Every morning the first thing I do is look out at the ocean.
There is often the sun rising; sometimes so vivid it does not look real, but it is!
Pelicans are often flying above or congregating on the water.
This is a large oil painting that I did from one of my morning photos and a bit of imagination.

Robots and Paintings

On First Friday, August 2nd, Kathy Garvey and I will be exhibiting our art at Highland Art Studio, 1425 Highland Avenue in Melbourne. I'll have my oil paintings on display.
Storm's Coming

Kathy has been making ingenious little robots out of clay and luggage tags.  Foreign object removal on the runway at the airport constantly turns up the metal tags off luggage, and only Kathy would see them as potential robots. They are so darn cute!

Vegetable Still Life, Red Pepper Painting, "Big Red" by Carol Schiff, 20x24x1.5" Oil

It has been some time since I have painted a vegetable still life, so I decided to try one this week.  In the past I painted every fruit and vegetable you could imagine, but they were small pieces, usually 6x8" or smaller.

Purchase here

This one is actually 20x24" and painted with a combination of palette knife and brush.  You will notice with this next image below, that the the background is actually more gray green than the blue shade above.  I must have taken 20 photos of this, trying to get the colors correct, but in the end I had to choose between the bluish background and the front end of the pepper turning a garish orange mustard hue. Yuck!  At any rate, the photo below seems quite accurate in both places.

Thank you for viewing my blog today.  I hope you enjoy this vegetable still life painting.  Give it a pin!

Inspired by travel: St. Maarten

There are so many good images that we see when we get out of our comfortable environment. We can see things from a different point of view. I like the fact that there is an "edge" to your awareness when you travel to a new place.

This was inspired by a recent trip to St. Maarten, which has not fully recovered from hurricane Irma over a year ago. (many expensive boats still sunk in the harbor.) However, it was still a delightful and beautiful place to see.

My painting reflects the beauty, and the "edge". Things are improving, but there is the threat with another hurricane in the future. (Let's hope all hurricanes just stay away!)

A Few Kentucky Butterflies

by Kathy Garvey

On my third day at my month long retreat at Furnace Mountain Zen Center, after a heavy thunderstorm (that also zapped my car), I found a beautiful little butterfly drowned in a mud puddle. I pulled it out, dried it off and then photographed and sketched it.

I had never seen a butterfly like this one and went on-line to discover its actual name is "red spotted purple." (Someone must have run out of imaginative names.)
Red Spotted Purple - Under wing has all the red!

Red Spotted Purple - Upper wing is a shimmery blue!
He was the first I found on my walks, but not the last. The abundant plants including milkweed and mountain laurel attracted many butterflies…among them tiger, zebra and spice bush swallowtails, fritillaries and monarchs.

I like to experiment with Photoshop. So, even though I have plenty of unmodified photos of butterflies that I am happy to share, here are a few of my "photoshopped" butterfly images from the trip. (Click on any image to enlarge it.)

Big Sky Palette Knife Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 6x8" Oil on panel

Finally, I just couldn't take it anymore.  I had to get back into the studio!
I had so much fun with this piece!  It seems like forever, since I had a palette knife in my hand.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it, and thanks for stopping bye today.

Have a great day!

Pet Painting, Cat Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting

This cat lives at our local art supply store.  My art group, Pieces of Eight, meets there each week, and we spend the morning creating, visiting, challenging.....and then have lunch together.

SOLD
Kitty loves to interact with us, jumping in the middle of our paintings, climbing into our art bags, doing her cat thing.  Usually mid morning, she climbs into her favorite sleeping place....an artist browser.  For those of you who don't know, it is a canvas sling, much like a hammock.  That is where I snapped a photo of her, which of course, woke her up.

detail
Can you tell, from her expression, that she seems less than happy with me?  I think I interrupted her nap in the sun.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

I had not painted outside in two years, so this was quite a challenge. It was one of those paintings I had to improve upon in the studio. ...
