Dog Painting, Pet Portrait, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 8x10" Oil Painting, SOLD

Today's post features a commission I was asked to do.  My customer wanted a large print of the family pet to give as a gift to her daughter.  She sent me several images of her dog Bennett.

Of course, I could not do a print, without an original painting, so we decided on a 8x10" oil.

SOLD

She chose what I considered the worse image.  She wanted a horizontal painting and the image was vertical.  She didn't want the background to be too strong and in the image, the right eye of the dog was in such deep shadow, it was practically invisible.  But........she felt this image captured the spirit of her pet.  We made it work!

She was thrilled with the final image and now she owns the original and her daughter has the large print.

Commissions can often be difficult.  It is hard to get in the head of your client, and translate their expectations to canvas and paint.  When it happens...it's a thing of beauty!

Thanks for visiting my blog today.

Pet Portrait, Dog Painting, Small Oil Paint, Daily Painting, 6x8" Oil Painting SOLD

Several months ago, I did a post consisting of dogs I have painted over the years.  The post generated a new commission from a high school friend who follows my blog.

SOLD
She sent me several images, but this was her favorite.  I had admired this image on facebook.  It was a picture of her, with her pup on her lap, both of them staring intensely into the camera.

Sadly, this sweet dog is no longer with us.  My friend was so affected by the painting, she cried when she saw it.  I was affected by her response and got a little teary eyed too.

I know she is missing her  companion, especially over the holidays.  I hope that in some small way, this portrait helped to fill the void.

In my next post, I will show you another dog portrait commission that I completed over the holidays.

Small Coneflower Painting, Flower Painting, Floral Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x8" Floral Landscape

I planted coneflower (echinacea) around my home in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  So...of course, I had to paint them too.

I find them to be easy to grown, and cheerful, with their giant heads and quirky style.

I painted several coneflower paintings last summer, in many sizes and styles.  Somehow, this little one was overlooked and never posted.

I tried to keep it fresh and simple, painting with a large brush.  I also tried to keep the colors harmonized.

All in all, I feel good about the results.  Hope you like it too.

Have a blessed day!

Love in Paris, 8x10 Original Oil Painting on Canvas Panel

We were stuck in traffic on the Seine and I looked out the window and saw this couple kissing. Actually, she was kissing him on the nose. What could be more romantic than a kiss in Paris, even if it's on the nose?

I had Valentine's Day in mind when I painted this. As a gift, may I point out that it's not fattening and it won't wilt.

The same day I was painting this, someone forwarded one of those emails with interesting photos. Included was the picture below, which fit right in with my painting:

Tropical Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, "Golden Palm" by Carol Schiff, 16x20" Oil, SOLD

I was going through some of my old files, and found this tropical Landscape painting that I did several years ago.  I was in morning light, in an area covered with palmettos.  I was fascinated by the play of light on the palm fronds, forming beautiful abstract shapes.

Figurative Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 14x18" Figurative Oil Painting "Just another Sunset", SOLD

This painting was a Christmas commission of two young sisters.

SOLD
I love the composition of this painting.  Two loving sisters, with that protective arm around the little one.

The big challenge here was to represent the beautiful sunset, without allowing it to become the bride of the painting.

My client was wonderful, commissioning me way back in August, which allowed me plenty of time to complete this painting.

Thanks so much for viewing my blog today.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, VanGogh landscape, "Tribute to Vincent" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil

Each week our art group appoints one member as leader.  The leader, decides what type of project we will work on that day.  A few weeks ago, Faye was our leader, and as her project, she brought it images of VanGogh and Monet paintings for us to re-create.

I chose his very famous "Wheatfield with Cypresses" . Actually, I chose one of three similar paintings that carry that name.

I have always wanted to give his famous and distinctive swirling brushwork a try.  It was an interesting experiment, one that I will probably do again.

Years ago, I spent some time studying the masters  and duplicating some of their works.  I found it to be very informative.  Here is one of my attempts at Degas' work, "Woman Bathing"

Ballard Park, Original Oil on Canvas

I had not painted outside in two years, so this was quite a challenge. It was one of those paintings I had to improve upon in the studio. ...
