Beach Oil Painting, Florida Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 6x8" Tropical Painting

I recently returned home from four wonderful days on Amelia Island, Florida.  The ocean is often very calm there....not a good surfing place.  One evening we stood on the beach and watched dusk descend over the water.

It was the first time I have been inspired to do a landscape in quite awhile.  I felt very relaxed, just painting this peaceful scene.  Hope you like it!

Have a great day!

A Chunky, Textured, Colorful Piece of Art That Makes Me Smile, Abstract Landscape, 8x8x3" Oil Painting

Today is gray, foggy and damp, so I decided to post the most fun painting I could find.

Purchase here

You know how I love color and texture and this little painting has it all.

I painted it on a 8x8x3" canvas, so even the shape is unique.  It's chunky and cute and it resides on a bookshelf , where it brightens the whole room.  I cannot help but smile each time I look at it.

The canvas was a mistake.  I did not realize how deep it was when I ordered it.  What could I possibly do with it?  Well, for this painting, I think it is perfect!

Have a fantastic day!

Northwest Landscape, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "The Great Northwest" by Carol Schiff, 12x16" Oil

My husband and I took our first trip to the Northwest last summer. We were stunned by the gorgeous scenery in every direction.

Obviously, we have pine trees and ocean views in Florida, but, how could they be so very different in Washington and British Columbia?  Everything seemed larger than life with trees towering into the sky and waterfalls tumbling down the sides of mountains.  It was a fabulous trip that we hope to repeat some day.

I painted this, in my studio, on linen attached to board.  As much as I like the idea of painting plein aire, it's not me.  I was taught to paint from images and still do it to this day.

Angelfish Oil Painting, Wildlife Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting "Angels on Parade, 8x16x.75" Oil

I am still reliving memories of my trip to the coral reefs off Key Largo last summer.  Today's painting  is inspired by that trip.

Something great happened with this painting......I really liked it!!  I love the texture, the hues, just about everything.  I guess I shouldn't be saying that about my own work, but I do!

I really enjoyed painting this piece and I think it shows.  I think it is important that an artist expresses their feelings in their work and I feel I was able to do that with this piece.  I was not trying to replicate an image, or colors, or even a composition.  I admit I was thinking about a companion piece to the one below.

It was a really good feeling to create these two pieces, more or less, out of my head, and I hope to do more of this in the future.

I have one more fishy piece to show you in my next post.

Thanks for reading my blog today.

A Daily Painter Questions the BIG PLAN

Traditionally, January is when we evaluate our performance over the last twelve months, and look at the direction we are headed.

Artistically, I see nothing but question marks.  I want to have a clear plan, a path to follow and mark my progress, but alas, it evades me.

I looked through my posts from last year, and picked out my favorite pieces, hoping against hope that they will tell me where I am headed.

 Abstract Expressionism?

Maybe....

Thick Paint?

 Impressionism?

 Brushwork?
 Knife?

Really thin paint?

Or does it really matter?

All this thinking is making my head hurt!

I am happy I found this many pieces, from last year, that speak to ME.  I am happy with them which makes me happy with me.

Maybe 2017 will find me treading the straight and narrow.....but somehow, I don't think so.

Thank you all, for joining me on my crazy, unplanned journey!

Large Landscape Painting, Storm Painting, "StormFront" by Carol Schiff, 24x30x1.5" Original Oil Painting

In the tropics, the storms come in quickly and violently!  This large landscape painting attempts to convey the power and drama of these events.

I painted with a palette knife and tried to keep all the strokes visible and strong.

Some areas have extremely thick paint.

This was a study for a 48x60" piece that I painted.

Fish Oil Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 8x16x.75" Palette Knife Painting

This painting was inspired by a trip to Key Largo's coral reefs.  It was thrilling watching the brightly colored tropical fish in their natural habitat.

I started with a brush, but soon had a palette knife in my hand.

I also started with a photo, but soon found my own way.  I made the fish plumper, deleted their stripes, just enjoyed the process and the freedom to do what came naturally.

As I worked the paint got thicker and thicker.  It was a fun and relaxing day in the studio.  I came away feeling good!

Enjoy the moment!

Ballard Park, Original Oil on Canvas

I had not painted outside in two years, so this was quite a challenge. It was one of those paintings I had to improve upon in the studio. ...
