Spoonflower contests spark the imagination!

By Kathy Garvey
Chinese Paper Cutting
To celebrate the Chinese New Year, we're asking designers to submit designs styled like a traditional Chinese paper cutting, using red and white only. Used for decoration during important celebrations, a paper cutting can also bring good luck, prosperity, and good health in the new year. Previews will be shown at the fat quarter fabric size (21" x 18"). Deadline for entry is Tuesday, January 28th, 2014.

I know I've written about Spoonflower before - that wonderful USA company that let's artists and designers print their own fabrics. They also have a weekly contest where you can enter designs and others vote on them. I've never won one of their contests but they do spark my creativity.  Following are two of my entries which challenged me to spend a good 40 hours creating.
In January they posted this...

Spring Floral Cheater Quilt Block

It may be the middle of winter, but we're already quilting for spring! This week, we're asking contestants to create a cheater quilt block with a spring floral theme. Cheater quilt blocks feature fabric designed and printed to look like patchwork or applique so that you can skip the piecework and go straight for quilting. All entries in this contest must use a restricted palette (blow) and white, and previews will be shown at (21" x 18"). Deadline for entry is January 7th, 2014
Here's what the color palette looked like.

And that's where the challenge came in for me. These are colors I would probably never use together in my design palette.  But I went into Illustrator and started working on some possible quilt patterns using just those colors. I created three different designs shown in the following images.

Then I positioned them together to make the following fabric.

There were hundreds of beautiful designs submitted for this project. The winning one was truly stunning. You have to go look to really appreciate the breadth of entries. Click here to see them: Spring Cheater Quilt.

In February the challenge was to create a Chinese paper cut design in only red and white.  I spent over 21 hours working on this and submitted it just a few minutes before leaving for a trip to Virginia. It's effort I would not have put in without the challenge.

Spoonflower attracts fabulous designers so the competition is stiff. (The top 10 designs all received upwards of 200 votes. This got a mere 57!) Take a look at some of the fabulous entries on their Past Contests link. Better yet, find some beautiful designer fabric and order it from them, or create an entry yourself. You'll enjoy the experience of working with Spoonflower.

Here's an excerpt from the current challenges! If any of them inspire you - go for it!

Upcoming contests

History of jazz

This week our Design Challenge is celebrating the rich history of jazz music. Previews will be shown at the fat quarter fabric size (21" x 18"). Deadline for entry is Tuesday, February 11th, 2014.

Geodes and gemstones

This week's contest is a treasure. Some people believe crystals and minerals have special healing powers. Some people just love the bling. Either way, we're inviting designers to create designs featuring geodes, gemstones, and special stones. Previews will be shown at the fat quarter fabric size (21" x 18"). Deadline for entry is Tuesday, February 18th, 2014.

Womens day toile

Toile de Jouy is a type of design popularized in the 18th century that typically depicts a complex scene, often pastoral, arranged into a repeating pattern. Classical toiles are usually two colors, with white or off-white as the background color and the pattern printed in black, dark blue, or red. For this contest, we're asking designers to come up with a toile de Jouy that celebrates remarkable female scientists, inventors, and leaders. Previews will be sized as quarter yards (21" x 18"). Deadline for entry is Tuesday, February 25th, 2014.
