Mmmm good

I saw a cute little gem of a move last night that I liked very much called Chef with John Favreau.  Make no mistake about it this is a movie dedicated to the art of food.  Buying it, preparing it, cooking it, appreciating it and last but by no means least, eating it.  This movie was written, directed and acted by people that show their love of family and life through cooking, serving and savoring food.  Alas, I am not a foodie but craved a Cuban sandwich or anything with lots of ingredients after the movie was over.
After seeing this visual homage to all things edible it made me think about how many paintings I had done with food as the main "ingredient".   So, no matter how you eat or think about food you can't deny it is pretty to look at and fascinating to paint.

Pear Season

After a long hiatus from oils I begged my fellow 8, Carol to stand over me and prod me along again.  She graciously agreed and after seeing her beautiful pear still life yesterday I asked if she would paint a pear with me. 
It felt good to just get out my oils, brushes, and easel and set up for a still life.  No products, no found objects, no newspapers spread on the floor, no rubber gloves just some oils and a canvas.  I painted this pear from a painting Carol had done awhile ago. Neither my colors or the shape is exactly the same but the process is.  Draw, mix, paint.
I have also been inspired by several of my other 8's who have committed to painting or drawing daily.  Thanks, sometimes life gets in the way but don't let it get in the way of doing something for yourself as often as you can.

Fun with a Still Life

Last Friday the Pieces of 8 got together to paint. Carmen set up a beautiful still life of some wonderful pears. Denette, Phillis, Mary, Carol and Carmen braved painting the still life. Their results were beautiful and I'm waiting for them to show up here! Cindy and Donna worked on a technique for hand coloring photos. Those should be showing up here soon, also. I dabbled with my watercolors. The Pieces are so much fun to be with and I'm glad it's OK if we don't paint the set up because I've never been good at still life!

But the set up was so beautiful, I came home and played with it in Photoshop. I never know when to stop, so here are Carmen's lovely pears in a variety of views.

And because the pears reminded me of little birds and of how much fun we're all having, the final view was modified further. In case the text is too small to read... "Do you think anyone would mind if we just had a few grapes?" "Mmmmm..." "Not looking, not looking. Don't tempt me. On a diet. Don't even think about it."

Getting my feet wet

I love, love, love the shape of pears...you'll see a lot of them in my work. So it is appropriate that my first post of my first blog be a pear! This is 7 x 5 acrylic on board and available on www.cindymichaud.com. I can thank Fran Hardy for getting me all pumped up about combining graphite and acrylic after building (and building and building) a surface to work on and then layering (and layering and layering) on the design and color. As tedious as this sounds it is actually quite relaxing and I am trying to have one going somewhere around the studio for that reason: some relaxation when I get my knickers in a knot over another piece.

Whew! a realtively painless post; this might be habit forming...
