Challenge for October, Small 10x3 Inch Artwork

It is a lot of fun to completely change the usual format for a painting. Our challenge this month was to create 10x3-inch art.

Alaska Landscape

It was a magical time when my cousins took us on a tour around their state, beautiful Alaska. This particular day was cloudy but a break in the clouds created a beautiful path of light in the valley. Just the kind of drama I like in a painting.

A 10x3 format works well for a single line doodle. The shape this one took, the long time it took me to fill it in, and the randomness of it made me think it had something to do with the times!

I Like Dreaming

My inspiration for this challenge is a charming oil on wood landscape of the Bay of Naples. I definitely don't have the talent or the patience to replicate something as well executed as this little gem, but I was inspired to start reminiscing about this and other favorite views from my travels.

Hello Kitty, 7x5 Original Oil Painting Animal Portrait of Cat

 

This is my daughter Suzanne's cat, an imperious creature, as you can see. This cat bit me once, but I have a very forgiving nature and honored it with a portrait anyway. Also, I happened to take a dramatic photo that I couldn't resist painting. By the way, the cat's actual name is Hello Kitty.

We were stuck in traffic on the Seine and I looked out the window and saw this couple kissing. Actually, she was kissing him on the nose. What could be more romantic than a kiss in Paris, even if it's on the nose? 

I had Valentine's Day in mind when I painted this. As a gift, may I point out that it's not fattening and it won't wilt.

The same day I was painting this, someone forwarded one of those emails with interesting photos. Included was the picture below, which fit right in with my painting:

Since I live by the beach, I get very excited when I see Fall colors. This tree just seemed to glow. We were in upstate Pennsylvania, staying on a farm. What a different way of life from flip-flop-wearing, easygoing Florida.

I got this wonderful bouquet for Mother's Day and I deconstructed it to make it interesting to paint. It also made it much more difficult. My previous painting was the same way, with many pieces and parts, so I need to snap out of it and simplify the next one. Of course, with flowers, your subject has a short life so you must act quickly and decisively. 

I put my bouquet back together when I was done and I thank it for its service. It is really beautiful and I'm loving all that purple.
