Wildlife Painting, Daily Painting, "Two Black Ducks" by Carol Schff, 6x8" Oil

A client wanted a large commissioned piece of her family's pet ducks.  There were lots of ducks...and they all were black.

I did this small study of two of the ducks....feeling my way around and trying to decide how to do the larger piece.

The client was happy with the study and I proceeded with the commissioned piece which is shown below.  The reference photo had dark ducks and dark background.  She also wanted to include two ducks that had gone to ducky heaven.  Below is the finished palette knife piece.

Hope your day is just ducky!

Wildlife painting, Daily Painting, "Mr Mallard" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil

We spend a lot of time in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, and usually the streams and rivers are full of ducks and Canadian geese. I found this Mallard in the beautiful park at Cherokee, NC.

If you are an artist, buying many frames, you may like this tip.  Ask your favorite framer to make you standard size frames from his "end pieces" of moldings.  Often these are thrown away and my framer is happy to have a chance to use them.  As a result, he sells them very inexpensively, attracting more business from artists.  A win, win situation.

This is from an image, several years ago in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I always think of these ducks as "Ebony and Ivory".  Thank you Michael Jackson!

The lake is surrounded with trees.  If you have ever been in the Blue Ridge Mountains during the summer.....green is everywhere you look!  So on this day, the water was a gorgeous turquoise and the shadows were absolutely an emerald green.

This summer, we are staying home, but in the fall we hope to spend some time in the mountains.  Fall in the mountains is really my favorite time of year in my favorite place.  Pumpkins and scarecrows are every where, reminding me of years gone by.  We go to the apple orchard and get fresh apples, apple donuts, apple pie, apple fritters.....well, you get the idea.  But, the best part are the gorgeous mountains covered in shades of orange, red and yellow!  I love getting up every day and running to the window to see how the trees of changed from the day before.  I cannot wait!

What is your favorite season and place?  The seashore in summer, skiing in winter?

Make it a great day!

Ballard Park, Original Oil on Canvas

I had not painted outside in two years, so this was quite a challenge. It was one of those paintings I had to improve upon in the studio. ...
